“Never write anything that does not give you great pleasure. Emotion is easily transferred from the writer to the reader” (Joseph Joubert).

Creative Writing

Creative writing is a passion and talent that I activated at an early age. Studying Literature improved my creative writing skills as expected. After self-reflection I concluded that being a writer and editor was my desire instead of being a lawyer, which is what guided my graduate school endeavor. Focusing on professional and technical writing in my career but creative writing in my personal time became the new plan that I put into action.

Graduate school enhanced my creative writing skilsl even more by causing me to think of writing in ways I’d never thought of before, especially regarding purpose, audience, and context. My most common purposes when writing creatively are regulating emotions and getting thoughts out of my mind that I need or desire to release. I’ve veered from that type of motivation on occasions and, for example, have written poetry as if writing from another person's perspective.

Poetry is the creative writing form I enjoy most. The writing, innovation, and organization practice that comes with poetry invention and arrangement is good practice for doing the same in the workplace. However, I sometimes take it a little further by reciting/reading my poetry for live audiences at open mic events, which is good public speaking practice that can transfer into the workplace.

The purpose of the following samples is to show other genres of writing besides professional/technical writing and to demonstrate that my writing abilities are limitless when keeping in mind the rhetorical situation. I have included free-verse poetry and rhyming poetry, using various poetic elements: alliteration, metaphors, similes, repetition, couplets, personification, rhythm, and imagery. Many moods and themes are evident in my poetry: sadness, anger, happiness, gratefulness, inspiration, love, disgust, and celebration. Other forms of creative writing are also included.
